June Corridor, Republican Candidate

Philosophy
Every child can learn. It is important for the school district to ensure that they
provide all the components necessary to help each child, including the children
with special needs, to reach their fullest potential.

Superintendent Search:
One who:

  • Earns the respect, trust and loyalty of the school staff and community.
  • Has extensive knowledge of the Connecticut Core Standards and curriculum.
  • Understands the vision and plan already in place.
  • Continues to build on the curriculum foundation level started in our schools.
  • Has the positive qualities of a good leader.
  • Knows how to build good morale among the school staff and community.

Middle School Reform:

It is time for a change. I believe it is time to move away from tracking children
because it destroys a child’s self-esteem, motivation and the ability for that child
to grow to their fullest potential. Therefore, I feel the district has started to
remove those blocks and to begin a new approach of heterogeneous grouping
in the middle schools. The school staff has been trained, given the necessary
resources and provided with “coaching” assistance. Also, the teachers are
provided with the enrichment activities necessary to ensure that the children

who are ready can be challenged at higher level critical thinking skills and the
intervention activities to assist the children who are having difficulty mastering
the skills. This new idea is an educationally sound approach to improving the
children’s reading, writing, math and science abilities and scores. If children’s
scores are rising, it can only mean that we are heading in the right direction to
closing the achievement gap in Stamford.

Budget:

Education is very expensive. Our taxpayers can no longer afford the bill for the
education of its children alone. It is important for the school district to maintain
the amount of monies available for education without raising taxes. However, it
will be necessary to find other ways of funding the programs, such as grants from
businesses in the community. It should be a community effort to ensure a high
level of education for its children. Stamford’s children are our most precious
resources..
