Position Papers - Please remember to VOTE November 8th!

Julia Wade, Democrat Candidate
Philosophy:
ALL children can learn. I believe in the 10,000-hour rule: smart is not something you are born with, it is
something you become by working hard for a long time.
Position:
The Stamford Public School District is pointed in the right direction. The positive results shown in improving
standardized test scores and student, teacher and parent surveys proves the system-wide transformation
is the right approach to providing a quality education for ALL children.
Issues:
The most important issue facing the new school board over the next year is the hiring of a new superintendent.
It is important to first hear from the community-at-large which qualities, traits and characteristics they would
like to see in our new hire. Personally, I will be looking for someone with a proven track record of urban school
reform who is known for working collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents and the Stamford community.
The role of the board is one of governance and policy setting, not intervention. Ongoing, while the district has taken the right steps -- standardizing
curriculum, improving professional development, replacing low level classes with rigorous study, reducing the number of middle school tracks, increasing
the number of students taking high school honors and AP classes, and introducing Scientifically Based Research Interventions for children in need of
additional academic support -- there is still much work to do in all areas. By understanding what to monitor and being vigilant in pursuit of the
information, we can ensure all children are receiving the appropriate instruction, enrichment and support necessary to be successful in school and
prepared for what lies beyond.
In addition to monitoring academics, research and common sense tells us that family and community involvement are critical components of a child's positive
school experience. The introduction of School Governance Councils is an exciting development and the outpouring of interest and support
gratifying. The challenge comes in sustaining a high level of participation. The board should do all it can -- including reinvigorating the
community engagement committee -- to monitor and support activities that prepare parents and community members for their role as advisors.
